Do You Need a Cover Letter?

Not every job requires a cover letter. Check the posting: "cover letter optional" means you can skip it. But submitting one (even when optional) can give you an edge—it shows effort and personality.

Always include a cover letter when:

  • • The posting asks for one
  • • You're applying to a small company or startup
  • • You're changing careers (explain the shift)
  • • You have a gap in employment (briefly address it)
  • • You're applying for a senior or leadership role

Basic Cover Letter Structure

A strong cover letter has 4 sections:

  1. 1. Header (your contact info, date, employer's contact info)
  2. 2. Opening (2–3 lines: who you are, what role you want, why you're excited)
  3. 3. Body (3–4 paragraphs: why you're qualified, what you can offer, how you fit the role)
  4. 4. Closing (thank them, call to action, sign-off)

Total length: 250–400 words (3 short paragraphs, not a novel).

Cover Letter Tips

  • Personalize it: Use the hiring manager's name if you can find it (LinkedIn, company website). "Dear Hiring Manager" is generic; "Dear Alex" shows effort.
  • Show, don't tell: Don't say "I'm a team player." Show it: "I led a cross-functional team of 5 to deliver X."
  • Match the job description: Use keywords from the posting. Explain how your experience aligns with their needs.
  • Tell a story: Why do you want THIS job at THIS company? Personal connection beats generic interest.
  • Keep it short: 3–4 paragraphs. Recruiters skim cover letters; respect their time.
  • Proofread ruthlessly: One typo kills credibility. Read it out loud. Have a friend review it.
  • Use a professional format: Standard font (Arial, 12pt), single-column, 1-inch margins.
